2010 Word of the Year

Merriam-Webster, America’s leading language reference publisher, has announced the top word of the year for 2010 based on popular searches in its online dictionary.

The word is austerity, defined as ‘enforced or extreme economy’, which results in the reduced availability of luxuries and consumer goods.   The word featured as a popular search item as the world’s attention was drawn to the global economic conditions and particularly the debt crises in Europe.
